Replacement for Sport Chrono clock V2.0
What is it and why do I want one?
Anyone who has the SportChrono option in their 997 or 987 is probably wondering what to do with it. I found it 100% useless. So, I decided to make it useful.
It is an instrument that replaces the SC clock. Because the analog instruments for oil temp and water temp in the dashboard are less than accurate - and sometimes hard to see (oil pressure) - or not present at all (987) - its main purpose is to give you accurate readings on coolant temp, oil temp and oil pressure.
What is new in Version 2.0?
The main improvements in version 2.0 are
The size of the LCD has increased by 50%, or you could also say that the bezel has shrunk significantly
The installation is way easier than in version 1.0. You no longer need to tap into the CAN bus and the fuse panel, simply plug it in. (with the exception if you have a PDK car and you want to display PDK temperatures, you still need to tap into the CAN bus).
A g-force meter has been added
How does it work?
You can switch between several modes (see pictures) on the device:
Analog clock
the clock is reading the time from the Porsche ECU via the CAN bus and will always be in sync with the clock in your Porsche
You can choose between 8 different pre-loaded clock facesAnalog clock but with two additional dots at the top and bottom, that indicate the oil temperature (top) and coolant temperature (bottom)
The dots move along the dial and change color (blue/green/yellow/red) based on temperature
I am now offering an add-on which allows you to see the car’s voltage. If the voltage is in normal range, it’s displayed in green. If it’s outside normal range it’s red.Oil and coolant temperature display (simple)
Oil and coolant temperature display with bars, which change color based on actual temperature
Oil temperature on top and oil pressure on the bottom (you can finally observe your car’s oil pressure without having your view blocked by the rim of the steering wheel!) - or if you have a 987, you finally have access to these two vital pieces of information about your car’s health right in your SportChrono wart.
Multi line display (if your car is a 987.1 oil pressure must be enabled (see below) to see this screen), showing
Oil temperature
Coolant temperature
Oil pressure
Voltage
PDK gear oil temperature
Measurement of acceleration
0-40 mph and 0-60 mph for cars in the US
or
0-50 km/h and 0-100 km/h for cars in countries using the metric system
For PDK cars only:
Oil temperature on top and PDK gear oil temperature at the bottomFor 997.1 TT and 997.2 TT cars only:
Boost pressure display, with Turbo peak pressure displayIn all screens a headlight icon is displayed if the headlights are on
Intelligent shift lights: the RPM thresholds are changed based on oil temperature
G-force meter
You are able to switch the temperature between Celsius or Fahrenheit.
The module also has “memory”, meaning whatever mode you had on when you turned the ignition off, will come on when the ignition is back on.
All data is read directly from the ECU via the CAN bus, that means if you adjust the clock in your dashboard you also adjust the clock in this device.
I like to keep things simple and decided against additional buttons or a touch screen to control the device. You can switch between the different screens by using the PASM button or via an external push button (supplied).
Of course the device will dim it's backlight when the headlights are on and it’s dark outside.
What will be displayed?
Time
Water temp (Fahrenheit/Celsius)
Oil temp (Fahrenheit/Celsius)
Oil pressure (for the 987.1 a modification on the car is needed, either read the instructions here and/or refer to this video, start at 8:19 in the video)
Voltage
PDK temperature (for PDK cars only)
acceleration time (0-40 & 0-60 mph) or (0-50 & 0-100 km/h)
Boost pressure
Intelligent shift lights: the RPM thresholds are changed based on oil temperature
G-force
How difficult is it to install?
The difficulty in installing this is 3.5/10, please read the installation / user manual (in the Documentation section of this site), to understand what needs to be done and then decide if you feel that you can do that. Owners of the device have reported back that it took them 1 - 3 hours to install it.
Any caveats or gotchas?
Your car needs to have the SportChrono option (duh). But there is also a version of the device available in the store for cars without SportChrono.
The following models are supported:
997.2 Base
997.2 S / 4S
997.2 GTS
997.2 Turbo and Turbo S
997.1 Turbo
997.1 Base
997.1 S / 4S
987.2 (all models)
987.1 (all models) supported with limitations (see below)
If you have a car with PDK you will need to physically tap into the CAN bus (please refer to the manual for details). Otherwise it’s plug & play.
Limitation for the 987.1: Oil pressure (for the 987.1 a modification on the car is needed, either read the instructions here and/or refer to this video, start at 8:19 in the video)
