Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is it and how long does it take to install the headlight module?

The difficulty level is 2/10. I am using OEM plugs, so it’s literally “plug & play”. You unplug your headlight switch and plug the module in the middle. That’s a difficulty of 1/10. For installing the light sensor you have to pop out one or two plastic panels and route the cable.

It should not take more than 15 - 60 minutes. Plugging in the module itself takes less than a minute. But give yourself some time to properly route and “hide” the light sensor.

How do I use the headlight module?

HOME is the new AUTO”. Set the headlight switch to HOME and the module will be enabled and do it’s thing. The HOME function (delayed turning off the lights at night) will still work.

For which Porsche models does the headlight module work?

The module works on 997.2, 997.1, 987.2 and 987.1

Does the headlight module work on Porsche 996/986?

Unfortunately no. The headlight switch of the 996/986 series is completely different.

Does the headlight module work for RHD (right hand drive) models?

Yes it does. I shipped many headlight modules to countries with right hand drive (UK, Australia, Japan) and I got confirmation that they work without any problems.

If I don’t like the product, can I return it?

Absolutely. Get in contact with me and send it back and I’ll issue a refund.

I have a VW headlight switch, which looks the same as my Porsche switch. Will it work?

NO! It will not. Even though both switches are mechanically identical, the electronics inside are different! You would actually be running the danger of damaging either the switch (or worse) the internals of your Porsche, would you connect it.

Do all the other functions of the headlight switch still work when I add the headlight module?

Yes, everything will work just like before.

Does the headlight module only turn on the front lights?

The module does more than just that, it controls

  • the front lights

  • the side markers (aka “parking lights”)

  • the tail lights

  • the dashboard lighting

It works just the same as you would turn the headlight switch and turn the lights on yourself by hand.

Does the headlight module consume any power when the car is off?

No.

There is a complete kit for automatic headlights on AliExpress which uses a VW lightswitch. Would that work?

Absolutely not! The problem is that even though the light switch and the connectors are mechanical identical (to the 9x7.1 not the 9x7.2), electrically they are not:
Porsche uses "active ground" and VW uses "active 12V". The Porsche solution is more elegant by the way.
If you would plug in the AliExpress adapter into your Porsche you would soon smell burning cable/electronics.

Why don’t you use the existing light sensor in the middle of the dashboard (the one in front of the center speaker)?

Believe me, I tried! But I was not able to get a usable signal out of it. I will keep trying to figure it out, but honestly I don’t have much hope here.

What is the difference between the switches for 9x7.1 and 9x7.2?

Electrically both switches are the same (besides the fact that the 9x7.2 doesn’t have a front foglight). The difference is in the “guides” for the connectors (see red arrows below).
The easiest way to check is to simply look if your switch has front & rear foglights (9x7.1) or only a rear foglight (9x7.2).
But if you want to be 100% sure as what type to order, please pull out your headlight switch (see the manuals for instructions on how to do that) and have a look.

9x7.2 connector above. You can see that the guides are closer together.
